Sach O: Synkro, Ghostbeard & King Cannibal
Sach O reporting live from the trenches. A newly found excess of civic pride once again compels me to alert our Montreal readership of a fantastic show going on this Thursday. Ninjatune head honcho Ghostbeard, UK bass monster King Cannibal and Future Garage will be throwing it down at Passeport for a paltry 8$ and frankly in the age of Avatar and 3D extravaganzas, one doesn’t find that much entertainment value for under a dime every day. To get y’all hype (and for the 99% of our audience that has no interest in the above), I’ve provided a few mixes and tracks to get y’all familiar. Ghostbeard’s been operating out of MTL for years, running Ninjatune’s North-American operations all while dropping DJ sets ranging from Jungle to Reggae and back. Who knows what he’s got planned this week but last year’s “Ghostbeard wins the Stanley Cup” provides a quality blend of Dancehall vibes for those who like me, are STILL upset at that Major Lazer debacle. King Cannibal on the other hand approaches sound system styles from a considerably more aggressive vantage point, sounding like The Bug if Kevin Martin speedballed cocaine and steroids while smoking meth and listening to industrial music. The Jamaican influence is still there, but subjugated to the whims of an angry Londoner who spent his formative years listening to entirely too much of the Gravediggaz’ oeuvre: check out Dirt featuring Daddy Freddy for proof. Finally, Synkro’s progressive styles are very much welcome (particularly after that sonic thresher of a Cannibal track). Alternating between deep dub and future garage material for the steppers, this mix from Rob Booth’s Electronic Explorations show has got me rolling blunts already. Tracklists after the jump.
