The Road to Hellfyre is Littered With Self Medication: Open Mike Eagle, Busdriver & Nocando Go Something Something
Open Mike Eagle's "Self Medication Chant" is a rosary for the downtrodden and dizzy, the sarcastic and the sneering. Those who find themselves disenchanted for vague reasons but find that their votives go unanswered. To those stressed and overworked and angry. It is dedicated to his friends losing his minds. It is a Howl and a good one.
There is more. Neither Eagle nor Busdriver nor Hellfyre Club Viceroy, Nocando are so self-serious that they all they do is wallow. Sometimes they write blistering acerbic raps that contain the funniest bars this side of Danny Brown. If you've ignored them prior, head into the woods with "Wernor Herzog," from Busdriver's new Arguments with Dreams EP. Eagle wins by calling himself the "Marc Maron of dark-skinned art barons." Busdriver says that he's making "witch house at your bitch's house." And Nocando compares himself to Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters II. So it is one of the best songs of the year. Argue with that and they will cover you in a river of toxic pink slime.
